When Multi tasking as a Mom becomes Overwhelming! Part 1

When Multi-tasking as a Mom becomes

As a mom of three children  two of  which are under the age of 2, I find my days are filled with endless multi-tasking. I am constantly juggling many different “to do’s”: taking care of kids, running a household, as well as writing, and building a business.

I often wonder, do I often strive for perfection versus living in the moment?  I am working on learning how to tackle each task one at a time and efficiently. In my previous career (when I was a full-time working mom) I would typically score very high on the Multitasking parts of my yearly reviews.

However, I am here to tell you multi-tasking these days is just not working for me.

At the end of most days I feel like I accomplished absolutely nothing! Not one project was completed! Somehow in the midst of all of it I missed out on quality time with my kids. Missing the quality time was not because I wasn’t right there with them. It was due to my brain being elsewhere or having my phone attached to me since part of building my business involves social media.

In an effort to pursue finding myself as a person and not just filling my role as wife and mom, I have been making time for personal development.

Personal development for me is a combination of devotional/quiet time and reading non-fiction or my new favorite listening to podcasts.  I will be very honest here I typically avoid non-fiction books like the plaque. Don’t get me wrong I love, love, love reading but for me reading has always been my escape from the chaos that can be my day or life ( which lately is far and few between to find time for that reading).

Since I have set this new goal for myself I thought I should stick to it. I am however amazed at how much I am learning about myself through this type of reading. It does take me forever to read a personal development book due to the fact it takes me longer to process the information and think about how I would apply it to my life. That being said I  listened to this wonderful podcast yesterday on the Chalene Johnson Show about how to have laser focus ( I won’t lie I was listening to it and organizing my office space at the same time) but she made some very good points. Enough that I have committed myself to go back and listen to both part 1 and part 2 with the outline in hand to really learn how to stop multi-tasking and focus on one thing at a time.

My commitment for the next 3 weeks is to really put into practice the elimination of multi-tasking as much as possible (I personally don’t think you can completely get away from it as a mom) and see how much a difference it makes in my days. After I listen and come up with some practices to put into place I will share with what truly worked for me. Hopefully this will put an end to my days of feeling like I was all over the place and not truly accomplishing anything. Have any great suggestions for working and stay at home mom’s to accomplishing your responsibilities each day please or any great personal development books please comment.
